How to Keep Pool Chlorine Levels Stable in Texas Heat

In a northern pool during summer, 1–3 ppm free chlorine is normal. That's what the CDC recommends. But if you maintain that level in a Houston pool in July, you're about to have an algae problem.

Texas heat burns through chlorine 3–4 times faster than northern climates. This isn't a myth — it's chemistry. Sun, heat, bather load, and humidity all work against you. Here's how to actually maintain clean water in Houston's summer.

Why Texas Chlorine Disappears So Fast

Extreme UV Exposure

Houston gets 230+ sunny days per year. Direct sunlight breaks chlorine molecules down into useless byproducts in minutes without a stabilizer. Even with CYA protection, the rate of UV degradation is faster in our latitude and intensity of sunlight.

Water Temperature

Chemical reactions speed up exponentially with heat. When your pool is 85°F (common in August), chlorine chemical reactions happen 50% faster than at 75°F. When it hits 90°F+, chlorine is consumed rapidly.

High Bather Load (Summer Parties)

Every person in the pool adds sweat, sunscreen, body oils, and cosmetics. These consume chlorine. A pool with 10 people in it uses chlorine 3–4 times faster than an empty pool. Summer in Greater Houston means constant use — weekends are chaos.

High CYA Levels

Year-round stabilized tablet use leaves Houston pools with CYA at 100–150 ppm by midsummer. This CYA protects chlorine from UV but also partially inhibits its effectiveness — requiring you to maintain higher free chlorine levels to compensate.

What Houston Pools Actually Need

National guidelines recommend 1–3 ppm free chlorine. Forget that for Houston. Here's what works in our climate:

Chlorine Options for Texas Heat

Stabilized Chlorine Tablets (Traditional)

Pros: Convenient, sustained release, don't require dosing.

Cons: Add CYA every single day. By August, CYA is out of control, and chlorine becomes ineffective. Need constant attention in peak summer.

Verdict: Acceptable for spring/fall, but insufficient for Houston summer without supplemental liquid chlorine.

Liquid Chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite)

Pros: No CYA added. Higher concentration. Fast acting. Allows precise dosing control.

Cons: Must be dosed regularly (every 2–3 days in summer). Stronger chemical smell. More expensive per application than tablets but cheaper long-term because you're not fighting CYA lock.

Verdict: Best for Houston summer if you can commit to frequent dosing (or hire professional service).

Salt Water Generator (SWG)

Pros: Produces chlorine on-demand. No tablets = no CYA buildup. Gentler on skin. Consistent levels.

Cons: High initial cost ($1,500–3,000). Requires salt, which can corrode some equipment. Cell needs replacement every 3–7 years ($500–800). Doesn't prevent chlorine from being consumed by heat — just eliminates the tablet/CYA problem.

Verdict: Excellent for Houston if budget allows. Eliminates the CYA crisis while maintaining consistent chlorine.

Managing CYA as a Sunscreen (Not a Problem)

Many pool owners view CYA as the enemy. But that's backwards thinking. CYA protects chlorine from UV. In Houston's brutal sun, you need it. The trick is managing it optimally:

Keep CYA at 40–60 ppm.

This provides UV protection without inhibiting chlorine effectiveness.

Use liquid chlorine + low-dose CYA.

Instead of daily tablets, use a once-monthly CYA adjustment plus liquid chlorine as needed.

Plan annual dilution.

Every 12–18 months, do a partial 25–30% drain and refill to reset CYA.

Test monthly in summer.

CYA changes slowly. One monthly test catches buildup before it becomes a problem.

Testing Frequency in Houston Summer

Weekend warriors test weekly at best. Professionals test 2–3 times per week (or daily for heavy-use pools). Here's why:

  • Monday: Test after weekend use. Chlorine might be depleted 30%+ from pool parties.
  • Wednesday: Mid-week check. Chlorine consumption slows during weekday use.
  • Friday: Pre-weekend test. Dose heavily if needed for weekend parties.

This prevents the Monday-morning-after scenario where chlorine crashed during a pool party and algae started growing overnight.

Supplemental Oxidizers

Beyond chlorine, some Houston pools benefit from non-chlorine shock or other oxidizers during peak summer:

  • Potassium monopersulfate: A mild oxidizer that breaks down combined chlorine (that harsh smell) without adding chlorine. Can be used weekly in summer.
  • Weekly shock: Even if chlorine is adequate, a small weekly shock burns off accumulated combined chlorine and keeps water crystal clear.

These aren't necessary but help high-use pools in Pearland, League City, and the hottest zones of Houston maintain that resort-quality clarity all summer.

The Professional Approach
