How Texas Heat Affects Your Pool Chemistry (And What to Do)

Welcome to summer pool ownership in Texas. Heat doesn't just evaporate water—it accelerates every chemical reaction in your pool, turning stable chemistry into a moving target. In Houston's 95–102°F summers, the rules change dramatically from national "standards."
Why 100°F Heat is a Game-Changer
Every 10°F increase in water temperature roughly doubles the rate of chemical reactions. When you jump from 75°F spring water to 95°F summer water, chlorine burns off 4–5x faster.

The Four Chemical Meltdowns That Happen in Texas Heat
1. Chlorine Depletion (The #1 Problem)
Chlorine has a shelf life, and sunlight accelerates its decay. At 95°F, chlorine loses 20–30% of its strength daily without stabilizer (cyanuric acid).
Solution: Maintain CYA (stabilizer) at 30–50 ppm. It's like sunscreen for chlorine. Texas pools need higher CYA than northern pools because sun exposure is year-round.
Also, if you're using cal-hypo shock (calcium hypochlorite), you're actually adding more CYA and calcium, which can build up over the summer. Switch to chlorine-only shock (sodium hypochlorite) or non-chlorine shock for summer maintenance.
2. pH Rise (The Silent Saboteur)
Heat causes pH to climb steadily. High pH (above 7.6) makes chlorine ineffective and causes cloudy water and calcium buildup. You're losing 50% of your chlorine's killing power at pH 8.0 vs 7.2.
Texas adjustment: Keep pH in the lower range (7.0–7.2) during summer instead of the standard 7.2–7.6. Test daily from June–August. You'll need acid (muriatic or liquid) more frequently.
3. Algae Explosion Above 85°F
Algae are plants. They thrive in warm water. Above 85°F, they double every 24–48 hours if chlorine levels drop. One day your pool is clear. The next morning, it's green.
Prevention: Maintain free chlorine at 2.0–4.0 ppm year-round, but aim for 3.0–4.0 ppm June–August. Brush walls daily during peak heat. Run the pump 10–12 hours to circulate chlorine constantly.
4. Mineral & Calcium Buildup
Texas water is naturally hard (high calcium, magnesium). Heat accelerates precipitation. Over summer, you get white scaling on tile, cloudy water, and chemical imbalances.
Management: Test calcium hardness monthly (target 150–250 ppm). If it climbs above 400 ppm, do a partial drain (20–30%) and refill with fresher water. Every 3 years, consider an acid wash or calcium removal treatment.

- Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity (at minimum)
- Dose chlorine to maintain 3.0–4.0 ppm
- Brush walls and floor (algae prevention)
- Empty skimmer baskets

- Test calcium hardness
- Inspect tile for scaling; clean with dilute acid if needed
- Review trend: Is pH rising? Is chlorine demand increasing?
- Partial drain (20–30%) if calcium exceeds 400 ppm
