Why Your Pool Test Strips Might Be Wrong

You dip the test strip. It turns color. You compare it to the chart. Everything looks fine. So why is your pool still developing algae or turning cloudy?

The answer: your test strip might be lying to you. It's not intentional. It's just that test strips are inherently unreliable, and their failure is the #1 reason Houston homeowners waste money on incorrect chemical corrections.

Why Test Strips Fail

Test strips rely on chemical reactions that produce color changes. That sounds simple, but dozens of variables can throw off the color — and your reading.

They're Expired (and you don't know it)

Test strips have a shelf life. Once expired, the chemicals no longer react accurately — but the strip still produces colors. You read a 'normal' pH when it's actually off by 0.5–1.0. Check the expiration date on the bottle. If it's more than 6 months old, it's unreliable.

Improper Storage

Test strips are moisture-sensitive. Store them in a dark, cool, dry place. If they're in your hot garage, humid shed, or — God help you — right by the pool, humidity degrades the reagents. Two months of bad storage = useless strips.

Not Enough Dip Time

The instructions say 'dip for 1 second and compare immediately.' Most people dip for 0.5 seconds and look 5 seconds later. The colors continue to develop after removal. Dip for the full time stated and compare within the time window.

Reading Too Late

The colors you're supposed to compare have a narrow time window — typically 15–30 seconds. If you dip and then read 2 minutes later, the colors have shifted. This is especially true for chlorine readings.

Sunlight Affects the Colors

If you're reading the strip in bright sunlight, the glare makes it impossible to match colors accurately. Read in shade or indoors under consistent lighting.

High CYA Interferes with Chlorine Reading

This is critical in Houston. If your stabilizer (CYA) is above 100 ppm, test strips give falsely high chlorine readings. A strip might read 'chlorine is fine' when you actually need 2x more chlorine to be effective. Most DIYers don't even test CYA — they have no idea this is happening.

Test Strip Accuracy: The Numbers

A professional liquid test kit (DPD method) is accurate to ±0.2 ppm. Test strips are accurate to ±0.5–1.0 ppm — meaning they can be off by a full ppm in either direction.

That doesn't sound like much. But in pool chemistry, ±1 ppm is huge. If your actual chlorine is 1 ppm and your strip reads 2 ppm, you add nothing. Your chlorine continues dropping. Algae blooms in 24–48 hours.

The Two Types of Testing Methods

Test Strips (OTO Method)

OTO stands for "Ortho-Tolidine" — an old chemistry method. It's cheap, fast, and widely available. But as explained above, it's unreliable and color-dependent. Most pool stores sell test strips as their entry-level option.

Liquid Test Kits (DPD Method)

DPD stands for "N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine." It's a reagent-based method where you add drops of liquid reagents to water samples and measure color intensity. It's more accurate (±0.2 ppm), tests more parameters (chlorine, pH, alkalinity, CYA, phosphates), and less affected by storage or lighting.

The downside? It takes 5–10 minutes and requires small test tubes and multiple bottles. But for serious pool maintenance, especially during Houston's pollen season, it's worth the extra effort.

What About Pool Store Tests?

Your local pool store offers free testing. Sounds helpful, right? It often isn't.

Here's the problem: pool stores use liquid kits, which are accurate. But the sample you bring has sat in a bottle for hours, been diluted by pool equipment, or contaminated by spilled chlorine. The test result might be accurate for the sample — not your actual pool water.

Additionally, some staff are undertrained. They test only chlorine and pH (the two things easiest to sell chemicals for) and skip CYA, alkalinity, and phosphates. And finally — let's be honest — pool stores have a financial incentive to recommend chemicals you don't need.

Not all pool stores are bad. Some have excellent staff and honest advice. But it's a gamble.

How to Test Your Pool Accurately (If You DIY)

Buy a liquid DPD test kit, not strips

AquaChek or LaMotte liquid kits are $30–$50 and last 100+ tests. Store in a cool, dark place.

Test in the afternoon (3–5 PM)

By afternoon, chlorine has stabilized (not fresh from your morning dose). Test in the deep end, away from the return jet.

Collect a fresh sample

Use a clean cup. Don't use sample bottles that have sat around.

Follow timing instructions exactly

If it says wait 30 seconds, wait 30 seconds. Not 29. Not 31.

Test all six parameters

Chlorine, pH, alkalinity, CYA, phosphates, and metals (if you test it). One missing parameter leads to one missed problem.

Keep a log

Write down results weekly. Patterns emerge over time that single tests miss.

Consider a digital meter for pH

A $20–$40 digital pH meter is more accurate than strips or color-matching. Calibrate monthly.

The Bottom Line

Test strips are convenient but unreliable. If you're serious about keeping your pool clear and healthy, upgrade to a liquid DPD kit or hire a professional. The money you save on wasted chemicals and emergency algae treatments will pay for professional testing 10x over.
