Pool Filter Pressure Too High? What to Do

Your pool filter gauge is reading 35 psi. Maybe 45. You know something isn't right, but what? And more importantly—will it break your pump?

High filter pressure is one of the most common problems we fix in Houston-area pools. The good news: it's usually fixable without replacing the entire filter. The bad news: ignore it long enough, and you'll be replacing a $1,500 pump.

What's Normal Filter Pressure?

Every filter has a baseline pressure—the reading when the filter is clean. This is printed on the filter's nameplate or in your manual. Typical baselines:

  • Sand filters: 10–15 psi when clean
  • Cartridge filters: 12–18 psi when clean
  • DE (diatomaceous earth) filters: 8–12 psi when clean

As the filter catches debris, pressure rises. Clean your filter when pressure climbs 8–10 psi above baseline.

Example: If your sand filter's baseline is 12 psi, clean it when the gauge hits 20–22 psi.

Causes of High Pressure (And How to Fix Each)

Dirty Filter Media

Most common cause. Sand, cartridge, or DE grids are clogged with debris.

Fix: Backwash (sand/DE) or rinse & replace cartridges. See methods below.

Clogged Return Lines

A blocked return fitting or underground line restricts flow.

Fix: Check return jets for blockage. If unclear, use a plumbing snake or call a pro.

Closed Isolation Valve

A valve between pump and filter is partially or fully shut.

Fix: Check all valves in the plumbing line. They should be fully open (valve handle aligned with pipe).

Damaged DE Grids

DE filter grids have tears or holes; they're trapping debris instead of letting water flow.

Fix: Replace grids. A torn grid costs $60–150 per grid; a full set runs $300–600.

Undersized Filter for Pump

Pump flow rate exceeds filter capacity; water can't pass through fast enough.

Fix: Upgrade to a larger filter (expensive) or reduce pump speed (variable-speed pump).

Why Texas Pools Spike Pressure Faster

The causes above apply to any pool — but Greater Houston's climate drives filter pressure up faster, and on a seasonal clock. Three local factors do most of the damage:

Spring Pollen & Post-Storm Debris

Two Houston seasons load a filter fast. Spring oak and pine pollen coats and clogs media for weeks, and a single Gulf storm can dump enough leaves and dirt into the pool overnight to spike pressure by morning. During pollen season and after any storm, expect to clean the filter far more often than the usual 4–6 week cadence.

Heavy Bather Load + 95°F Heat

Summer means more swimmers, more sunscreen, and more body oils — all of which load the filter faster. Combine that with the longer run times the heat demands, and the filter simply collects more, sooner. A filter that lasted a month between cleanings in March may need attention every couple of weeks in July.

Hard-Water Scale in the Media

Much of Greater Houston — Sugar Land, Katy, the west side — runs hard municipal water. Over time, calcium scale builds up inside cartridge pleats and DE grids, permanently restricting flow. A scaled filter reads high even right after cleaning, which is why a simple rinse stops working after a few seasons and the media needs a chemical soak or replacement.

Technician Tip

Don't confuse high pressure with low pressure. HIGH pressure = a restriction AFTER the pump (dirty filter, scale, closed return). LOW pressure = a restriction BEFORE the pump (clogged skimmer, full pump basket, air leak). Fixing the wrong end wastes a whole afternoon.

How to Clean Each Filter Type

Sand Filters (Most Common)

Backwashing reverses water flow to flush debris out. Takes 3–5 minutes:

  1. Turn off pump
  2. Set multiport valve to "Backwash"
  3. Run pump for 3–5 minutes until discharge water runs clear
  4. Switch valve to "Rinse" and run 30 seconds
  5. Return valve to "Filter" and resume normal operation

Backwash every 4–6 weeks in Texas (more often in summer). If pressure keeps climbing after backwashing, sand may be compacted and need chemical cleaning ($150–300 professionally).

Cartridge Filters

You cannot backwash a cartridge. Instead, remove and rinse:

  1. Turn off pump
  2. Close isolation valve (if present) to reduce water drain
  3. Remove filter housing lid
  4. Lift out cartridge
  5. Rinse with a garden hose (low pressure only; high pressure damages pleats)
  6. Inspect for tears, grease, or oil staining. If torn, replace (~$100–250)
  7. Reinsert and close lid

Rinse monthly; replace cartridges every 2–3 years or when pressure stays high even after rinsing.

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

Backwash, then re-coat the grids:

  1. Turn off pump
  2. Set multiport valve to "Backwash"
  3. Run pump 3–5 minutes until discharge runs clear
  4. Switch to "Filter" and stop pump
  5. Add DE powder to the skimmer (usually 2–4 lbs for residential filters)
  6. Run pump to distribute DE evenly across grids

Backwash every 3–4 weeks. If pressure won't drop below baseline, grids may be torn (replace for $300–600).

When to Replace vs Repair

Repair (Clean or Replace Media)

  • Pressure rises slowly over months = Dirty media (backwash or rinse)
  • Cartridge rinsing fixes the issue = Continue rinsing quarterly
  • Sand compaction (backwash no longer helps) = Chemical clean ($150–300)
  • Single torn DE grid = Replace one grid ($60–150)

Replace (The Whole Filter)

  • Filter is 10+ years old and pressure won't stabilize = Replace ($600–1,500)
  • Multiple torn cartridges = New cartridge set + new housing ($800–1,200)
  • Multiple torn DE grids + old filter = Full replacement ($1,000–2,000)
  • Pump overheating due to chronic high pressure = Filter is undersized; upgrade filter size

Why High Pressure Damages Your Pump

When filter pressure climbs to 40+ psi, your pump works twice as hard. The seal (which keeps water out of the motor) compresses under stress. Seals fail in months instead of years.

A failed pump seal = water inside the motor = motor burnout = $1,200–2,000 replacement.

Prevention is cheap; a new pump is expensive. Monitor your gauge weekly and clean your filter on schedule.
