Water Chemistry Testing
This is the foundation. Bad chemistry leads to algae, equipment corrosion, cloudy water, and skin irritation. Every visit should start with a full test.
Technician Tip
Always test and adjust alkalinity BEFORE pH. Alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH — if you adjust pH first while alkalinity is off, your pH will bounce right back within hours.
Physical Cleaning
Skim the surface — Remove all leaves, bugs, and debris from the water surface
Brush walls and tile — Focus on the waterline where oils and minerals build up
Brush steps and benches — Algae loves to hide in textured surfaces
Vacuum the floor — Either manual or ensure the automatic cleaner ran that week
Empty skimmer baskets — A full basket kills water flow and strains the pump
Empty pump basket — Same issue, plus potential for pump to lose prime
Equipment Check
Equipment problems caught early are $50 fixes. Caught late, they're $500–$1,500 replacements. Every weekly visit should include a quick equipment scan.
Check pump pressure gauge — normal is 10–20 PSI (varies by system)
Listen for unusual pump or motor noise — grinding, screeching, or humming
Inspect for visible leaks at equipment pad
Verify pump is primed and water is flowing
Check pool cleaner operation if applicable
Inspect water level — should be at mid-tile or mid-skimmer

Testing CYA monthly: Most test strips don't measure stabilizer at all. CYA creeps up all season, and by August your chlorine is doing almost nothing — which is how pools turn green with "perfect" chlorine readings.
Brushing the waterline every single visit: Body oils, sunscreen, and calcium build a ring that becomes a permanent stain if it's skipped for a month. Once it sets, you're looking at a tile clean or an acid wash, not a brush.
Tracking filter pressure over time: A single reading tells you almost nothing. A rising trend means a clogging filter; a falling trend means a flow problem upstream. You only catch trends if every visit gets logged.
Combined chlorine: That "chlorine smell" is used-up chlorine that's no longer sanitizing. Strip tests can't see it. Without FAS-DPD testing, a pool can read "fine" while it's one hot weekend from a bloom.
The pump basket O-ring: A dab of lubricant twice a season prevents the air leaks that cause a pump to lose prime and burn out a motor. It takes 30 seconds and almost nobody does it.
