How to Lower CYA in Your Pool (The Only Way That Actually Works)

Your pool's CYA (stabilizer/cyanuric acid) level is 150 ppm. Normal is 40–80 ppm. You want it lower, but you've heard there's 'no way to lower CYA.' You research and find conflicting advice: drain it, add CYA reducers, use enzyme products. Which works?

The honest answer: only one method actually works. And it's not what you want to hear.

Why CYA Is Hard to Lower

CYA (cyanuric acid, also called stabilizer or conditioner) is a chemical compound that protects chlorine from UV breakdown. It's in every chlorine tablet and stick-based chlorine.

Here's the problem: once CYA enters your water, it doesn't leave. It doesn't evaporate, it's not filtered out, and chlorine can't break it down.

Adding more CYA is easy

One tablet, stick, or powder dose adds it. Repeat 100 times over summer = CYA creep to 150+ ppm.

Removing CYA is permanent

The only removal method is dilution (draining water and refilling). One drain = removal. No repeat formula.

CYA affects chlorine effectiveness

At 150+ ppm CYA, your chlorine is only about 30% effective. The higher the CYA, the more chlorine you need to disinfect.

Why "CYA Reducers" Don't Work

You'll find products online claiming to reduce CYA chemically. Names like "CYA Remover" or "Stabilizer Reducer." The marketing is tempting: just add it, and problem solved.

Spoiler: they don't work. Here's why.

CYA is a robust chemical compound. No cheap consumer product can chemically break it down. Companies that sell these products rely on water chemistry confusion. Customers add the product, don't see results, and blame themselves ("Maybe I didn't add enough?") instead of the product.

Research backs this up: no independent pool chemistry lab has found a CYA-reducing product that actually reduces CYA. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance doesn't recommend any.

Save your money. Enzyme products? Algaecides? Clarifiers? None of them touch CYA. The only thing that works is water removal.

The Only Way That Works: Partial Drain and Refill

You drain some water, refill with fresh water. That fresh water dilutes your CYA. The math is straightforward.

Step 1: Calculate How Much to Drain

Use this formula:

(Current CYA − Target CYA) / Current CYA × 100 = % of pool to drain

Example: Your pool is 20,000 gallons. Current CYA is 150 ppm. Target is 60 ppm.

(150 − 60) / 150 × 100 = 60%

60% of 20,000 gallons = 12,000 gallons to drain

That's a significant drain. For League City and Friendswood pools, that's 2–4 hours of draining time.

Step 2: Drain Properly

Never use the main drain valve unless you know your pool has hydrostatic relief valves. High water pressure from rain or groundwater can damage the structure. Instead:

Use a submersible pump with discharge hose

Place the hose discharge away from landscaping and neighbors' property

Drain gradually over several hours (not all at once)

Monitor water level on the skimmer — don't drain below the skimmer line

Step 3: Refill

Use a garden hose or pool hose. Refill to the normal water level (halfway up the skimmer opening). This takes 4–8 hours depending on water pressure.

During refill, the fresh water (which has zero CYA) mixes with your pool water, diluting the CYA. Once refilled, your CYA level will be much lower.

Do NOT add CYA back immediately. Wait 24 hours for the water to stabilize and circulate. Test CYA. If it's still high, calculate again and do another partial drain.

The Hydrostatic Pressure Risk (Why Professionals Matter)

Draining more than 25–30% of your pool is risky if you don't have hydrostatic relief valves in place. Here's why.

If your pool is in an area with high water table (much of Houston's Clear Lake, Webster, and Galveston Bay area), groundwater pressure can push against the pool structure. Remove too much water and the pressure can crack the pool shell.

Before draining more than 25% of your pool:

Call a professional to assess your pool's relief valve situation

Check the weather forecast — don't drain before heavy rain

Have a technician monitor during the drain (they can spot warning signs like cracks or settling)

Preventing CYA Buildup in the First Place

Once you've lowered CYA to 40–80 ppm, keep it there. This saves you from needing another drain later.

Switch from Tablets to Liquid Chlorine

Chlorine tablets and sticks contain CYA. Each tablet adds CYA. Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) has zero CYA.

Switch to liquid chlorine and you'll maintain CYA without buildup. Downside: you dose it daily (vs. tablets that dissolve slowly). But for Houston's hot months (May–September), it's the only way to prevent CYA creep.

The CYA-to-Chlorine Ratio

Once CYA is in the sweet spot (40–80 ppm), understand how it affects chlorine effectiveness.

Required Free Chlorine by CYA Level (pool industry standard):

  • CYA 0–40 ppm: 2–4 ppm chlorine
  • CYA 40–80 ppm: 3–6 ppm chlorine
  • CYA 80–120 ppm: 6–10 ppm chlorine
  • CYA 150+ ppm: 12+ ppm chlorine (overkill, indicates a problem)

The Bottom Line

CYA lowers in one way: partial drain and refill. It's not sexy, it wastes water, and it takes time. But it works. Anything else you read or see for sale is marketing nonsense.

If your CYA is already high (100+ ppm), don't put it off. Call a professional to handle the drain safely. In Houston's humid climate, high CYA + heat = chlorine ineffectiveness = algae blooms = expensive recovery costs.
